Case Study: Age UK
In 2009, Age Concern and Help the Aged amalgamated to become Age UK. Age UK has a vision of a world in which older people flourish. They aim to improve later life for everyone through their information and advice, campaigns, products, training and research. Age UK supports and assists a network of over 330 local Age UKs and Age Concerns, which between them provide an extensive network throughout England. Local Age UKs and Age Concerns in England (each one an independent charity) provide vital direct services to people in later life throughout the UK, working in partnership with the national organisation. Local services can include: information, advice and advocacy services; day centres and lunch clubs; home help and 'handyperson' schemes; and IT and other training. In 2009 we worked on a training project with Age Concern West Sussex. The aim was to provide first line management training for a number of its staff. The group included Day Centre Managers, a Good Neighbourhood Scheme Manager, a Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator - most of whom were focused on specific projects involving the supervision and management of a mix of employed staff and volunteers. We were delighted that as a result of the course five of these hard working people achieved the ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management.
